Being comfortable under sail is all about managing a boat under a given condition. How you trim, steer and adjust the sail settings has a massive difference on the way that the boat behaves. Learning these concepts is simple enough to explain in a classroom, but on the water experiences will vary drastically from boat to boat.

When a small, light boat sees a change in condition, like a puff or a wind shift, it’s going to instantly let you know something changed. If you have a good instructor or basic knowledge you will learn what corrections you need to make to keep sailing in the manner that you want to. They quickly react to changes in sail trim and steering input and let you know if what you did was good or bad.

Everything you learn when sailing in a small boat will transfer up to bigger boats. Small boats are tons of fun and will always improve your skills. Pros all over the world train in dinghies. It’s the easiest way to get time on the water and the quickest way to get better trimming and driving.
